Rooster

Charm never made a rooster.
~ Dean Acheson

If a "rooster" is one who roosts, then where does baby oil come from?

Running

I'll be happy if running and I can grow old together.
~ Haruki Murakami
- - - - -

So when I was little my parents always told me not to run with a sucker in my mouth or I could fall down and choke and die. No one says that to dogs. People are  jerks. One of two things must be true - my parents were fun-killers who didn't want me to enjoy my candy with my full range of motion OR my parents hated dogs.

Possum

You can't put this possum in a cage.
~ George Jones
- - - - -

I found out there is a song by The Toadies called "Possum Kingdom." Then I read the lyrics and thought it was a bit disturbing. Then I thought about a kingdom of possums and thought that was a bit disturbing, too.

Also I was going to look up and see why George Jones was called "The Possum" but then a picture of him popped up, so I didn't need to.

Lent

Never lend books, for no one returns them; the only books I have in my library are books other folks have lent me.
~ Anatole France

I did NOT know you had to audition. I did this wrong most all of my childhood.

Bird

In order to see birds, it is necessary to become a part of the silence.
~ Robert Lynd
- - - - -

I bet the person who got all those birds for Christmas broke up with their true love after that. I don't think anyone would want to be with someone who was giving them the bird all the time. Unless bird is slang for a creature that can fly and soar and be beautiful against the sky, in which case, that really IS true love.

Chocolate

One of the secrets of a happy life is continuous small treats.
~ Iris Murdoch
- - - - - -

Leslie gave me these last year. It was a very nice thing for her to do last year. There was one of them that I didn't like. That doesn't mean I am any less grateful for the kindness and Leslie's thoughtfulness. It means I am less grateful to the chocolatier.

Looking

There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something.
~ J. R. R. Tolkein
- - - - -

When dogs look out at the world, they see opportunity, fun, and excitement. When people look out at the world they see pouring rain, they are slow moving and feel trapped, they are shaken a bit. They hope to move forward, but have no real control.

Of course, I'm mainly thinking of when people look out at the world while they're sitting in an automatic car wash.

Games

Life is more fun if you play games.

~ Roald Dahl

I find this image confusing. More than half of almost every game is loitering until it's your turn again.

Birthdays

You don't stop having fun when you get old. You get old when you stop having fun.

~ Rita Ghatourey
- - - - -

Today is Leslie's birthday. I'm not going to post about her getting older or joke about her age or mention her age is older than it used to be. In fact, if you define old as in "born in the last century," well then, I guess she IS old. But so is someone who is 23.

Now what do you have to say to that, troublemaker?

Portrait

The dog is the perfect portrait subject. He doesn't pose. He isn't aware of the camera.

~ Patrick Demarchelier
- - - - -

The dog is the perfect portrait subject because dogs are perfect. Except when they drink out of your glass of beer that you set on the floor like Lily did to Leslie's beer last night.

(pause)

I wish I'd gotten a photo of that.

Ancient

Let others praise ancient times, I am glad I was born in these.
~ Ovid
- - - - -

I got this cereal one time for Leslie. I was going to have her try it and then tell her, "You are what you eat!"

But she was out of town and I got hungry so I tried it. It is really good. I guess this is just an example of that old saying, "Buy a food to trick a friend, then you eat it in the end".

There are a lot of those old sayings you don't even know, I bet.

Dr. Lewis

Everything that is made beautiful and fair and lovely is made for the eye of one who sees.
~ Rumi
- - - - -

I almost bought this for Leslie but then I remembered she forgot to go to optometrist school and instead is a doctor in education. If she were to go back and become an optometrist, I would go get this for her. But they might have already sold it by then, so she probably shouldn't bother.

Anticipation

If you come at four in the afternoon, I'll begin to be happy by three.
~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery
- - - - -

Those who begin to be happy before people visit are extroverts. This who begin to be happy 20 minutes after people leave because by then we can be sure they aren't coming back are introverts.

Leaves

I'm convinced that petting a puppy is good luck.
~ Meg Donohue

I love this puppy.
And this puppy loves the leaves.
So where's that leave us?

Garbage

Beauty is in the strangest places. A piece of garbage floating in the wind.
~ Alan Ball
- - - - -

Maybe. But if that garbage is a broken chair floating in the wind, I don't think I'm going to say it's beautiful. I think I'm going to say, "LOOK OUT FOR THAT CHAIR!!!" so you don't get hit in the head with it.
