Silence

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation.  Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego.
~ Jean Arp

This quote reminds me of a clock some people I have known have had.  I think maybe my grandma had one.  Anyway, each hour on the hour it made a different bird sound.  We cover up the sounds of nature with reproduced sounds of nature.

The one exception to this - the one sound of nature that I think it is okay to cover up - is the sound of farts.  But if you can only cover up one thing better to cover up the SMELL of farts.

Perhaps one day we will write, "Soon smelling will have passed into legend..."

Jean Arp died in 1966.  He'd be really amazed at all the machines, devices, noise and distractions we have now.  Maybe he'd be so distracted he wouldn't have time to fret about that other stuff.
