Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.
~ Thomas J. Watson
- - - - -There are different levels of being unsafe for each of us. The identities we hold and the experiences we have; the access to power and privilege we each possess; the ways in which the world makes meaning of our existence -- all of these set the stage for how much risk we can take.
For example, it would be unwise to take a risk such as committing an alleged crime if you are a guy with red dreadlocks who is wearing capri pants. At least if you don't want to get caught. I say that not hypothetically but because we got a Clemson alert on this a while back. It might have been one guy with red dreadlocks and a different guy in capri pants, but still - those risks are different than the risks of alleged crime-doing if you are not a guy with red dreadlocks wearing capri pants.
Think before you controversy. Then controversy away.
On a maybe-related note: why do we dread those locks, anyway?
