Canape' comes from the French for "couch" because it was believed that the little snackens made up of a base with topping(s) looked like a person on a couch. This being the case, if you made canape' with a roasted beet topped with a dollop of mashed potato, you will literally be serving people couch potatoes. And if you serve those to someone sitting on a couch, well, that's meta.
