A tree was cut down to make this picnic table.  And here you can see the reflection of a tree that has not been cut down in the picnic table.  If they were able to think, to pontificate, I wonder if the table would look longingly upon the tree and wish to be growing again.  And if the tree would look in horror at the table.

Recognition

When we were watching the opening ceremonies for the Olympics, Elizabeth was talking about how she was going to grow up and design an olympic stadium.  I told Maddie it was going to be really cool because it will be the first time a former Olympic gold medalist will have designed an Olympic stadium.  And that Elizabeth's triplets will also be competing in the Olympics that year and she will also have designed the uniforms for the U.S. athletes to wear at the opening ceremonies.

And we agreed that Maddie would be so proud to tell all her cats about it while they watched the ceremonies on TV.

Well, maybe Maddie didn't agree to that....

So, Leslie and Kirk convinced me I should watch Downton Abbey.  Of course I had to mock it (see image above).  However, it is addictive.  In fact, I found myself - after watching the end of the second season - going over my list of chores for the next day in my head.  And I found myself doing this by alternating the Irish and British accents of the service class.

Does this mean I want to be a member of the service class or I just wish I had members of the service class to do my chores?  Probably neither.  It probably means I watched too much Downton in one shot.

Work

I consider it the highest compliment when my employees go out and start their own companies in competition with me.  I always send them a plant to wish them well.  Of course, it's a cactus.

When Megan told me that my blog reminds her of Jack Handey, I took it as a compliment.  Then later I wondered if she meant my use of Jack Handey quotes reminded her of Jack Handey.  And I got really angry at her for being so sarcastic and mean.  But she had already moved to Oregon, so my vengeance would have to wait.

When I returned all of my books to the library, the librarian said that the computer system was down so they were forgiving all the fines.  Otherwise, she would have had to charge me $1.50 for each book.  I said that computer problems are sometimes good.  She grunted.  I think in agreement.

I asked if the library had slow since classes ended.  She said, "No.  We've been busy with people like you returning their overdue books.  Most of them have to renew some of the books and it takes them 20 minutes to figure out which ones."  She paused, then looked up at me.  "You don't need to renew any of your books, do you?"

"No," I said quickly, trying to curry favor.

"That's good."  She continued to scan my books back into the system.  

"One good thing," I said, "Is that I know how many books I can check out at a time because this is all that I can carry."

"Yes," she concurred.  "We have people returning them in carts and boxes and bags..."  I thought about asking if they came with ribbons and tags because she sounded a little like that line from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but decided not to mention it.

Artist

Apparently, this was the elixir of creativity at the Des Moines Art Festival last year.  I had to challenge the staff when they confronted me, though.  Because who is to say whether or not I'm an artist?  And the sandwich artist being escorted away from water cooler at the festival had a right to be outraged, as well.

In looking at this photo, I got to thinking that Spiderman doesn't shoot his webs out of his butt the way spiders do.  I think this was a good decision on his part.  He would be pretty vulnerable to being blindsided in attacks if he had to turn around every time he wanted to fire a web at an enemy.

When Jessica came to visit my house, she said, "I hope you close your windows at night since you live so close to the train tracks."  At first I was confused.  A closed window was not going to keep a train from careening through the house.  Then she added, "Someone could just jump off the train and break in."

First of all, thanks for one more thing to worry about.  As if I didn't have hobo concerns already.  I have written about them in this blog mainly because I'm not sure that hobos get on computers too much and if they do, I strongly suspect they do not follow my blog.

Second of all, why would a hobo jump off a train and choose THIS house to break into?  There are other bigger, nicer houses with nicer vehicles and boats and stuff that a hobo might choose.

Third, I think my cross stitch of "Hobo is Where the Heart Is," will make any hobo that jumps off a train and breaks into my house feel really guilty and he or she will leave and not come back here again.

I saw a woman the other day ask a colleague if he spoke "Spanish."  I put the word "Spanish" in quotation marks because that is what she did with her fingers.  According to Wikipedia, airquotes are used to indicate satire, sarcasm, irony or euphemism.  I don't think the Spanish language is any of those things.

But that is "just me" "not understanding" what her "point" was.

Dad:  Hi.  Your mother and I have been working on this [juvenile nativity] project for the last 3 weeks.  We made 56 sets of 3 figurines each for the kids in the preschool at our church.  Your mother painted most of them and I cut, sanded and primed them.  I had a bunch of scraps of 1/2" plywood and figured this was better than sending them to the landfill.

Me:  That is really cool, but what preschoolers really like are plaster of Paris sheep so they can eat the heads off of them.  Wait.  Maybe that was just Erik.

I didn't write this to my father, but I think he's right that Baby Jesus would rather that the wood was used to make little nativities instead of being sent to the landfill.  Of course, I'm just speculating.
