Life gives a family and lets you choose a family. Sometimes we're given generously and choose wisely, sometimes not. Either way, we make the most of it - or at least we should. I think Maddie and Elizabeth try to make the most of the fact that they were given to each other (and didn't get the chance to choose one another).
On the other hand, Elizabeth did get to choose Ripley (and there are times when they look very much alike).
